NYC MAYOR, ZOHRAN MAMDANI FLAGS 'COMPETING VISION' OVER RSS?

Political debate has been sparked as Mayor Zohran Mamdani expresses opposition to an upcoming event at Madison Square Garden, featuring RSS chief Mohal Bhagwat.

Mamdani said about the event to be held on 29th August, that he does not support or associate with the gathering. He describes himself as deeply opposed to RSS's ideological vision but also acknowledge that New York City does not have legal authority to cancel a private event.

Mamdani focuses his criticism for the ideology as it gives a 'competing vision' for India, which feels divisive in nature. The mayor says that he has always believed in an India that was a pluralistic and secular republic where every citizen belongs. This vision of India is not compatible with the RSS and its exclusionary ideology.

The RSS is often described as the ideological parent of India's ruling party. It has time and again, rejected allegations of intolerance and declared their main focus to be on uniting Hindus, which can be isolating to other religions in India. Supporters of Bhagwat's New York appearance have also defended the event as an opportunity for dialogue within the Indian diaspora.

These comments have also made Mamdani a target of criticism and trolling among some Indian American communities in New York. While these debates may keep intensifying until Bhagwat's visit to New York, they also highlight a very important aspect of Indian politics and the ideological divisions.
