As India celebrated its 80th Independence Day at the historic ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi, millions of viewers tuned in to watch the nation’s flagship Independence Day ceremony. Amid the grandeur and military precision of the occasion, a young female Army officer standing beside Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the flag-hoisting ceremony quickly drew public attention.
The officer was Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan of the Indian Army.

NEW DELHI: Every year, the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort follows a carefully coordinated protocol involving the armed forces and other security and ceremonial personnel.
Officers and personnel are assigned specific responsibilities, from ceremonial duties and the Inter-Services Guard of Honour to coordinating movements during the Prime Minister’s arrival and the national flag-hoisting ceremony.
For the 2026 Independence Day celebrations, Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan was seen performing a prominent ceremonial duty alongside the Prime Minister as he unfurled the Tricolour from the historic Red Fort.
The ceremony was marked by several elements of military tradition and national symbolism, including the 21-gun salute, the Inter-Services ceremonial presence and the rendition of Vande Mataram by an Army band.
The 21-gun salute was fired by the 1721 Field Battery using indigenous 105mm Light Field Guns, adding a distinctly Indian dimension to one of the most traditional elements of the ceremony.
Personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Delhi Police also took part in the Rashtriya Salute as the national flag was hoisted.
