Russia and Ukraine are deep in conflict, after another major wave of drone attacks on Monday, injuring civilians and damaging infrastructure as the war continues ignorant of renewed diplomatic efforts.
The strikes followed one of Ukraine's largest recent drone
offensives against Russia. Russian authorities say that the Ukrainian drones
targeted the Moscow region, forcing temporary restrictions at several
airports. A major fire was also reported at a warehouse belonging to the Russian online retailer Wildberries.
Russian officials said that 800 Ukrainian drones had been
intercepted during the attacks, although the figures could not be independently
verified. At least one person was reported killed and several others injured in
the Moscow region.
The latest exchange demonstrates not just how drones are becoming
one of the defining weapons of the war, but also how both sides are nowhere
near agreement or ceasefire.
Ukraine has stepped up attacks on Russia’s territory and infrastructure
in an effort to disrupt their military capabilities. Russia, meanwhile,
continues to launch large-scale drone and missile attacks against Ukraine.
For civilians on both sides, the growing use of drones means
that the dangers of the war have greatly extended far beyond the battlefield.
Cities and infrastructure hundreds of kilometers away from the conflict zone are
now, unfortunately, vulnerable to attacks, making air-defence systems an
important part of the conflict.
Though diplomatic efforts continue, the war seems to be
escalating and putting more civilians at a vulnerable state on both sides.
