United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a stark assessment of global geopolitics, declaring that the post-Cold War era of absolute U.S. dominance and single-power hegemony has officially come to an end. Speaking as he nears the end of his decade at the helm of the United Nations, Guterres emphasized that major global powers are misjudging the extent of their influence and reaching the clear limits of their ability to project force or unilaterally dictate international outcomes.

Guterres pointed to protracted modern conflicts—specifically Russia’s campaign in Ukraine and the escalating regional standoff between the U.S. and Iran—as clear evidence that military strength no longer guarantees swift diplomatic or strategic political victories. He warned that superpower paralysis has created a dangerous vacuum, allowing mid-sized regional powers to act with growing autonomy and impunity while the UN Security Council remains virtually deadlocked. To prevent an unmanaged multipolar world from sliding into broader confrontation, the Secretary-General urged comprehensive reforms to global governance institutions.
